My Love

February 14 , 2010 | | In: Poems

An unattainable love from way back when fills my heart with grief again…
The soul fills a different face but it vibrates at the same pace…
I long to be near, knowing in my heart it would stop the tears…
I long to be in loves embrace, a smile you would find upon my face.

Why everyone doesn’t use herbs and other natural things to help reduce stress is beyond me.

A study in the Journal Of Agricultural And Food Chemistry, by Dr Akio Nakamura, found that when lab rats placed under duress were given a whiff of linalool, a chemical found in flowers and citrus fruits, their stress was instantly alleviated. Seems the that just breathing in certain smells can actually alter gene activity and blood chemistry to reduce stress.

You know for years people have been using flowers and herbs to help with depression, inflammation, stress, colds, fevers and insomnia. This is how medicine began! Can you believe it took this long for there to be “proof positive?”

I love my oils. I add them to my candles, bathwater, humidifier, diffusers, rub on my bed sheets, rub on a sheets of paper and place them in my drawers and even under my car seat. LOVE THEM!

Heart Strengthening Foods

November 30 , 2009 | | In: Healthy Eatin'

Try replacing some sugary processed foods with these:

Tomatoes help lower cholesterol thanks to lycopene. It can come in any form from ketchup (6 Tbs a day) to tomato juice (2 cups a day). There is nothing like fresh tomatoes and if you are like me people give you tons of thier extras in the summer. Best idea I’ve had lately, can those babies! I can get enough tomato sauce to make spaghetti all winter long off the tomatoes people want to give me in the summer. And I never have to grow a thing! No weeding, no bugs, no sweat!

Garlic helps by making blood flow freely, lowering your systolic number by up to 8 points. The dosage you ask? One clove a day, chop, mash or press and let sit for 10 minutes then eat or cook in that spaghetti!

Chocolate and Wine Strengthen Your HeartChocolate can reduce that inflammation. Thank God. I love Chocolate and I hate inflammation. Aim for 2oz of dark chocolate a week. Oh Yeah. Eat with a glass of wine and enjoy. Your getting two good things in one snack. This is a small amount of both so don’t skimp on either, go for the good stuff and enjoy!

Pistachios can help keep heart damaging fats in check. Try this, when you are shopping for food think the packaging. Is it reusable? Is it cute? Plastic? Glass? I have some wonderfully cute jars around my house that I use to keep things in from cotten balls to peanuts, which brings me to my point…keep a jar of Pistachios on your desk or cabinet, even in the bedroom or living room. Grab a handful a day. Don’t feel guilty because these are good calories, however don’t grab a handful every time you walk by because calories from nuts add up fast.

You could also combine your pistachio with your chocolate… yummy ;-)

Winter Herbs

November 30 , 2009 | | In: Earth Friendly Life, Healthy Eatin', Herbs

I CANNOT KEEP MY PLANTS ALIVE!!! Seriously if there are any of you that can help, please let me know.

I bought a fern at the beginning of summer and

Tips for Wintering your Herbs

I have brought it inside. It is on its last leg. I also bought a rosemary plant the other day. The Rosemary Plant has such wonderful abilities. ;-)
nnn

For those who try hard like me, here are some wintering tips:

Light loving herbs go in south facing windows. My Rosemary is going there. Other herbs would include basil, chives, sage, and thyme. Shade loving herbs get the western or eastern windows. Remember to place them in a bit in away from the windows, you’ll want to avoid leaf burn from either cold or sun.

Herbs like to be spun. Spin them around once a week! They also like to breath. Turn on the fans or open the windows occasionally to circulate the air. It is a must that you snip them back often and enjoy them in your recipes. Fertilize them once a month. Play them music and talk to them frequently.

And one last tip, it is said they like to be grouped together not separated.

    All About Apples

    October 8 , 2009 | | In: Healthy Eatin', Life Lessons

It seems Apples are a very useful fruit indeed.

Can you believe an Apple tree can live up to 100 years old? Apples are a good source of vitamins (A, B1, B6, C, Beta Carotene, D and K) and minerals (Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Potassium).
    apples4
A medium apple will have around 80 calories and 5 grams of fiber! That’s pretty good!!

A little known fact is that apples are good for your teeth. The peel mixed with the juices push back the gums and clean them out.

The term “Adam’s Apples comes from the knot the forbidden fruit made in Adam’s throat after Eve successfully tempted him into munching! In actuality, the bible does not specify the apple as the fruit Eve offered Adam, that fruit is only referred to as “the fruit of the tree…” (Genesis 3)

We carve pumpkins and wear scary mask to scare off the ghost and goblins on Halloween night. But did you know, you should leave Apples outside with your pumpkins on Halloween eve to feed the wandering souls waiting to move on to the next world?

Bobbing for apples works because the apples float. The apples float because they are 25% air.

If you peel an apple in one long continuous peel and then fling it over your shoulder whatever letter is formed is the first letter of the person you will marry.

There are 7,500 different varieties, 2,500 of which are grown in 36 US states. They come in all different sizes and in many different shades of reds, yellows and greens. The only native apple to North America is the crabapple.

Now that you know all about apples…eat up! Never forget what you learn as a child, an apple a day keeps the doctor away!

Want to ease stress a bit? Spend a morning,  pampering yourself with this routine. (Perhaps more than one morning!)

Starting first thing in the morning, spend a few extra minutes under the covers. This may sound a little weak but…research shows a little extra sleep increases the level of serotonin, that’s one of the top feel good hormone!  (Sleeping in packs more of a punch than than going to bed early.)  Make sure to take a lesson from the family pet and get a good stretch in before climbing out of the bed!  Try one of those fabulous alarm alarm clocks that ease you into the day by simulating a sunrise.

They make heated towel racks for a reason people! If your not lucky enough to own one of these bad boys, try this trick, throw your towel and robe into the dryer before you take your shower.  When you get out of the shower the warm towel and robe will keep your muscles relaxed longer, keeping you stress free for longer.  If you have someone that can bring it to you straight from the dryer when your done with your shower, even better!!!

Try this acupuncture trick… massage your scalp a little longer while your washing your hair in the shower.  Use firm pressure, making small circles with your fingertips.  Take your time starting at your temples and working your way to the top of your head and then down the back of your neck.  This will increase circulation to your scalp, erase tension in the head and neck and give you really shinny hair.  Try a tea tree shampoo to add a tingling sensation and give you an even more refreshing shower.

Put your lotion in the shower with you or get a lotion warmer.  Trust me, slathering warm lotion on after you have had a refreshing shower is one of life’s little hidden gems! Don’t forget to treat your feet.   There are more than 1,000 nerve endings on your soles alone!  Start with a basin full of warm water and add some foot wash. Don’t be afraid to make some bubbles, life is short!!!  Place a handful of marbles in the basin.  Soak your feet for 15 minutes, rolling your soles over the marbles to stimulate the pressure points.  Then give them a good scrubbing massage.  Finish up with lotion.

You are now ready to face the day, relaxed and refreshed!

    Chives

    September 14 , 2009 | | In: Herbs

Chives are a perennial favorite of most gardeners.

They are one of the easiest herbs to grow, and the first to return in the spring.

To harvest, snip the ends off, don’t pull up the whole stalk. Snipping will actually encourage growth.

Chives can be chopped and dried for winter use. Or better yet, move the pot inside and place in a sunny spot over winter for chives year round.

    Catnip

    September 13 , 2009 | | In: Herbs

    Catnip

Catnip is a member of the mint family and very easy to grow.  All mint varieties, are incredibly invasive and will take over a garden very easily so prune mercilessly

or keep it in containers or raised beds.  Catnip grows well anywhere in the garden or window sill but prefers full sun.

    Calling all shoppers!

    September 5 , 2009 | | In: Kiss Anxiety and Stress Goodbye!

You’ll love this… studies show that when we shop it activates a part of the brain associated with desire and reward.  Thus creating a rush of the happiness hormone dopamine, which alleviates stress, irritability and the blues.  Don’t have any cash?  Apparently window shopping creates the same reaction as actually buying.  I’ve got my shopping shoes on already!

    Things Can Change

    September 3 , 2009 | | In: Life Lessons

We have this feral cat, and she had kittens. She had two orange ones and two grey ones. I would take food over and leave it at the edge of the woods for them to eat. You couldn’t get remotely close to these cats, but I would leave the food and they would eat and I enjoyed watching them play.

Well the momma started bringing this little orange one up and leaving this little fellow under our truck. I would go out and try to get close to it, and it would run off into the woods after its momma. I noticed that it had a head wound so I really wanted to catch this little one. The momma cat kept bringing it back and leaving it under the truck. Soon it was too weak to really run from us. So we caught it and I took it to the vet.

Turned out it had a worm in its head. The vet got the worm out, we came home and the kitten had a new residence in the bathroom. That lasted a week or so. Then we started letting it out of the bathroom into the house. We realized that the little thing was deaf. Could not hear a lick. But he quickly made friends with the other two cats and the two dogs. He loved this pillow I had on the couch and he would lay up there and he was like a king on that pillow.

And every time I looked at him I couldn’t help but think…that no matter how bad it might seem… even when your close to death with a worm in your head…in an instant the whole thing can change… you could end up resting on a nice fluffy pillow, with plenty to eat, toys to play with and a few good friends… ;-)

We did find a home for the little fellow and now he has a new family and I’m grateful to the universe for bringing him into my life to teach me a valuable lesson.
